Commission Prices & What to Expect

Pricing for handmade work is a subject that tends to confuse people the first time they look into it. A handmade blanket costs significantly more than a machine-made one at the same size and visual complexity. A watercolour pet portrait costs more than a printed photo card. The prices below reflect the actual time the work takes, the materials it uses, and the care that goes into it. Nothing here is bulk-produced or outsourced.

Crochet commissions

Blankets and afghans are the largest part of the crochet output. Prices include UK postage and the cost of yarn; I use good-quality materials and source them deliberately. Overseas postage is quoted separately and added at cost.

For a custom blanket in a chosen palette I'll send a small yarn swatch before committing to the full piece, so you can see and feel the yarn first. A 50% deposit is required before work starts; the balance is due on completion.

Timelines: most blankets take 3–6 weeks depending on size and complexity. Smaller pieces are typically 1–2 weeks. I'll give you a realistic estimate with your quote, not an optimistic one.

Watercolour commissions

Most watercolour commissions are pet portraits. Dogs most often, though the studio has painted cats, horses, and one very distinguished rabbit. Botanical subjects and bird studies are also available but tend to be slower because they're less in demand and I fit them around the portrait work.

All portraits are painted on Arches 300gsm cold-pressed paper. The finished painting ships flat in a stiffened mailer. Framing is available as an add-on through a local framer; this is quoted separately.

Turnaround is usually 2–4 weeks. Autumn is the busiest period for pet portrait commissions — people ordering for Christmas — so if you need a portrait by December, October is the right time to enquire. I can take a limited number of Christmas commissions and they do fill up.

One round of minor adjustments is included in the price (background tone, overall colour balance). Major reworks after the piece is finished are outside the scope of the original commission and quoted separately.

Photography print pricing

All prints are archival giclée on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm paper, printed locally. Editions are limited to 25 per image for standard prints. Each print is signed. Framing available as an add-on.
